At Burton Church Of England Primary School, we believe that all children should be welcomed into our school regardless of their culture or faith. Religious Education at Burton teaches children about worldwide beliefs and practices and allows pupils the opportunity to learn about the lives and beliefs of people of other faiths and none. It encourages children to respect the beliefs of others, to understand and feel comfortable about their own beliefs whilst trying to make sense of their place in our multi-faith and diverse world. We aim to develop critical thinkers who understand they do not need to believe everything they are told, but must draw their own conclusions and develop their own beliefs.
We follow the Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (RE Focus) and teach focused RE lessons using a combination of Jigsaw RE and Understanding Christianity. Most of our Christianity units are taught using Understanding Christianity and children experience this faith in every year of their school life. We teach The Jewish Faith, Sanatana Dharma (formerly referred to as Hinduism), Sikhi (formerly referred to as Sikhism) and Islam using the Jigsaw RE enquiry modules, introducing different faiths (and more in-depth studies of faiths already introduced) as children progress from EYFS to Y6.
