“The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”
Theodore Roosevelt
“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?”
Michael Palin
At Burton CE Primary we adopt an enquiry- based approach, beginning with the children’s own life experience before moving into learning about the world we live in. We provoke challenging questions and are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in history and geography. We have adopted the
Collins Primary Schemes to develop aspirational learning where the children develop a love and understanding of humanities as they develop their knowledge and skills of research as well as using first and secondary sources to aid their learning.
We teach either history or geography each term, resulting in three history and three geography learning experiences over each academic year.
We endeavour to enhance our children’s learning by inviting history and geography specialists to visit school for special workshops and drama days we also enjoy taking the children to visit historic or places of geographical interest to bring their learning to life. We are also fortunate to have an orienteering course within our school grounds for the children to develop their understanding and skills of compass points and using maps.
