Meet the Governors

Welcome to the Governors' section of the website. Here you will find out a little bit about us and our responsibilities within the school.  This page is currently being updated to ensure full compliance with the information which now has to be published by school governors.

A school governor is a volunteer who helps oversee how a school is run. Governors are part of the school’s governing body, which provides strategic leadership and holds the headteacher to account.

Their main responsibilities include:

  • Setting the school’s direction: Helping decide priorities and what the school should improve.
  • Monitoring performance: Checking that pupils are making good progress and that the school is meeting its goals.
  • Supporting and challenging the headteacher: Asking questions, reviewing decisions and ensuring the school is well managed.
  • Overseeing finances: Making sure the budget is used effectively and responsibly.
  • Safeguarding: Ensuring the school has appropriate policies and arrangements to keep children safe.
  • Representing the community: Bringing parents’ and the wider community’s perspectives into discussions.

At Burton, our governors have two committees:

Curriculum Committee

This is about educational outcomes. Governors might review assessment data, attendance, disadvantaged pupils’ progress, special educational needs provision and whether the curriculum is broad and effective.

They don’t tell teachers how to teach individual lessons. Instead, they ask questions and monitor whether the school’s approach is working.

Finance Committee

This is about financial responsibility. Governors might review the annual budget, monitor spending against it, consider staffing costs, check financial controls and help make decisions about significant purchases.

About me: My daughters had an enjoyable time when they attended Burton Primary, so the best way I could thank the school was to see if I could be of use as a governor. With nearly 50 years in the construction industry, I was sure I could give advice and keep an eye on projects and maintenance work. My first year as a governor has been a busy one, so thanks to the school for giving me this opportunity.
