Welcome to Hedgehogs' Class!
Summer 2 2021
We are so pleased to welcome back all our fabulous Hedgehogs to school after the half term break! We hope you've had a refreshing break and are ready for the final half term of this academic year!
This term is packed full of brilliant learning opportunities and begins with our new exciting topic, 'World's Kitchen.' In English, the children will start the term taste-testing English and foreign fruits, and using all their senses to write their very own descriptive poetry. In Guided Reading, we will continue to read, 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundall which is an exciting adventure story and has left the children gripped at the end of every chapter! In Maths, we will consolidating our understanding of number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will continue to collect data on the measurement of our sunflowers weekly. When all the continuous data had been collected, the growth of your child's sunflower will be represented in a time/line graph. The children will continue to practise their times tables and corresponding division facts on Times Table Rock Stars. In Religious Studies, we will be exploring the big question, 'What kind of world did Jesus want?' We have organised a 'Question Time with the Vicar' event later this term via zoom or in person (dependent on the latest Covid guidelines). As you can see, we have a very exciting term ahead and Mrs Markwick and myself can't wait to get started!
During the school day, we will be enjoying the outside as much as possible in all weathers! Please make sure you always bring a waterproof coat in case it rains and a sunhat and sun cream if the weather is hot. You will also need to bring a named water bottle, packed lunch (if you're not having a lunch provided by school) and a healthy snack to eat at break time.
Mrs Castro has her PPA time on a Thursday afternoon and the children will be enjoying Spanish and Music with Mrs Davis and Mrs Markwick during this time.
Our PE days are currently every Monday and Wednesday. Please come to school wearing your Burton School PE kit on those days and if it is chilly, don't forget to wear a hoodie/jumper and some jogging bottoms too!
The children will continue to be set their weekly spellings every Thursday and have been taught several fun strategies to practise them at home. Please could the red Spelling Journals be returned to school every Wednesday ready for a spelling quiz and to enable the new spellings to be given out on Thursdays. All spellings are taken directly from the National Curriculum statutory word lists years 1 - 6.
In addition to this, the children have been shown how to access TTRS, MyMaths and SPAG online activities to compliment their learning in school. MyMaths provides brilliant online lessons to work through and activities to complete. SPAG provides learning in the form of quizzes. Both MyMaths and SPAG were extremely popular amongst the children during lockdown and provide additional support to reinforce their learning in school. Your child will find their set weekly activities waiting to be completed once they have logged into their account. Please encourage your child to access these activities to support their learning in school. All login details can be found in your child's Reading Record.
We are incredibly fortunate this year because every child in year 4 can participate in a reading programme called 'Accelerated Reader'. This programme is designed to develop and monitor reading ability as well as foster a love of reading. Children are expected to read their Accelerated Reader books every day in school for at least 20 minutes. Every child's progress is monitored weekly through regular quiz results which review their comprehension of the book they have just read. Your support is vital and you can help your child by encouraging and supporting them to read their Accelerated Reader book every day at home in addition to reading their book in school. You could read with your child, to them, and by talking with your child about what they are reading. Children will be given an opportunity to take Accelerated Reader quizzes in school, but quizzes can also be completed online outside of school. Your child will find the Accelerated Reader website address, their individual username and password on the inside cover of their Reading Record. For more detailed information, please see 'Accelerated Reader Letter for parents and carers' below.
The Read, Write, Inc programme will continue in a similar way to last academic year, and during this time, children will work in small groups within class 'bubbles'. For more information, please see Mrs Markwick (class LSA) or myself, Mrs Castro.
Please feel assured that your child's well-being is of paramount importance to us. It is therefore vitally important that we work in partnership with you to ensure every child feels safe, happy and respected, enabling them to experience the very richest learning opportunities.
Please let us know of any worries, fears or concerns, however large or small as we are all in this together and often a 'problem shared is a problem halved!' You can contact me as class teacher via the school office and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
